London Road Fire Station Needs Help!

Submitted by on November 30, 2012 – 19:392 Comments | 1,343 views

Opposite Picadilly Train Station in central Manchester sits a building which many of you will have walked past, some of you- those perhaps the more observant will have noticed the old Fire Station on London Road is stunning. Its actually a Grade II listed building and is on the English Heritage “At Risk” list- those two lists don’t sit well beside each other do they?

How can a building recognised as being of historical significance be “at risk”. Its a real shame that’s for sure and here at VintageManchester.com we want you to help rescue it. There have been lots of comings and goings from Manchester City Council and promises that haven’t been fulfilled from a variety of high profile people.

This building could be a remarkable entrance to the city of Manchester, an art gallery, hotel, offices, theatre or even some kind of school- Northern RADA anyone? It just needs some TLC!

Hi – I am very familiar with the London Road Fire Station, having been a young apprentice some fifty plus years ago in the city. One of the last occupants of the building was AFA,
Associated Fire Alarms, until they were gobbled up by ADT American District Telegraph?
Tragically the beautiful building has been empty possibly some thirty years?
As has been mentioned the building footprint is large enough to house a hotel, art gallery, museum, dance and cultural centre, coffee shops, retail shops and a plethora of other uses including offices.
This could all be done without destroying the amazingly beautiful and classical Facade, which when you look at what has been done on Deansgate, next to the other Jewel in the Crown, the John Rylands Library, which is another stunning building both inside and out.
And what did they build next to it?? A soulless concrete and glass creation that the most beauty is to see all the occupants belongings hanging on hooks, desks or backs of chairs!!!
    through the windows!!!
We have many beautiful buildings left in Manchester, and lets not forget they were all created by the wealth of Industry and commerce, as Manchester was the FIRST Industrial city in the WORLD, lets not let the Council sell this on, the Town Hall could be next????
Sign up and save this beautiful building before it is too late!!!!
